Easing off the drink, a healthy reset with Dry January this New Year

Every January 1st , thousands of people all over the world wake up with a raging headache so painful they swear to never drink again…well, at least for a month.

Dry January, is a modern concept, officially invented and formalized in 2013 by Alcohol Change UK. Its intention is to attempt to spend a whole month without drinking alcohol. It’s proven that even a short break from alcohol can have noticeable physical and psychological improvements, like weight loss, improved sleep and being more positive and energetic. People attempt ‘Dry January’ from a health point of view, as they more than likely have gone ‘over the top’ over the Christmas and New Year festivities. Others look at it as an excuse to stop spending after a very expensive December.

It sounds like an easy task but can surprisingly be a massive struggle for many people. Tom Holland, the actor of Spiderman, famously took on the ‘Dry January’ challenge and after realizing he didn’t find it half as easy as he thought, he decided it would be best to quit drinking completely.

Alcohol Change UK offers tools and advice for those taking it on and they registered over 200,000 people last year, this number doesn’t count the millions of people doing it globally on their own accord. The overconsumption of alcohol is debilitating and can create long lasting physical issues- such as bad digestion, liver problems and high blood pressure. Not to mention, the every-day emotional side-effects.

On our latest Good Morning Spain episode we had the Sober Social’s girls, Emma and Louise, an initiative proving there is no need for alcohol to have fun, on the sofa to chat more about Dry January. Have you ever tried Dry January? If  you haven’t, would you?
