A Coffee Lover’s Guide to Spain: Exploring coffee culture

A good day can’t start without coffee! Or at least it seems that way in Spain. This is your guide to coffee in Spain.

Coffee seems simple, but in Spain there is more than what meets the eye. If you want to feel like a real local, you must know what types of coffee there are and not go to the local ‘caf’ and try to order a hazelnut latte.

Café solo- expresso, just coffee

Café cortado- small coffee with a dash of milk

Café con leche- coffee with milk (flat white)

Café sombra o manchado- milky coffee, depending on where you are located it is said in one way or another.

Café nube- very milky coffee

Café americano- coffee with water

Café Bonbon- coffee with condensed milk

Café Carajillo- coffee with liquor

Another thing that surprises tourists are the iced coffee’s- forget your iced latte´s and frappuccinos. In Spain, you will receive a coffee with ice, literally. A hot coffee with a glass of ice which you will have to pour in yourself.

Coffee time in Spain is more than just an energy boost, its culture. Spaniards will often have up to 4 coffees a day: morning, mid-morning, merienda and after dinner.

What is great in Spain is that you don’t need to get out a mortgage to sustain your coffee addiction. Although in touristy areas, it may be more expensive, a coffee is usually around 1.70 euros or less. It is commonly served in a small glass, rather than a mug-  don’t be surprised when you see a group of people on a terrace sipping a piping hot coffee in a glass wrapped in a tissue!

This is your coffee guide for your next trip to Spain! We chatted about this topic on our show.
