Struggling to think of a Christmas present for your family? Well if they drive, get them the new V16 safety beacon. This is the new emergency method which has been put in place in Spain which is set to replace the trusty triangle.
The V16 beacon will become mandatory on January 1st for all drivers and will be considered the only recognized and legal device for emergency’s. The beacon is a magnetic device that, in the case of an accident, your vehicle being immobilized, or your luggage falling off, you must place it, preferably, on top of your car. The small device emits a 360º flashing light alerting others of your presence.

This new emergency beacon has been put into place to stop people from having to leave their vehicle to signal their presence on the road. According to the DGT, the Spanish agency responsible for traffic and road safety, announced that in 2022, 42% of mortal accidents on the road were caused by pedestrians leaving their vehicle, which includes leaving to place the emergency triangle.
Something that has people surprised is that whenever you turn the light on, the device sends your geolocation automatically to the DGT.

There are lots of questions regarding this new system, with lots of fake news also circulating the media. Let’s clear some things up so you are ready for the New Year.
- Does the beacon call emergency services?
NO! The beacon does not call emergency services, so if you are in an accident or need help you still must call 112 to receive help. The DGT has your location but needs to be alerted to ‘move into action’.
- Is the beacon obligatory for motorbikes?
No, it will not be mandatory but is recommended.
- What if I drive over from the UK/ rest of Europe?
If you are driving with a foreign number plate you are exempt. Your car must be registered in Spain.
- Can I use the beacon abroad?
The triangle is still mandatory in the rest of Europe but the beacon can be used- just not to replace it.
The arrival of this gadget has not come without its criticism, with many people disapproving of having their location shared, while others believe it is a brilliant upgrade for road safety.
The V16 beacon is selling out fast. They are priced from around 35 euros and must be officially approved by the DGT to be valid. Have you got your beacon yet? What do you think of it? Watch our latest episode of Good Morning Spain where Neil explains everything you should know.
