On Good Morning Spain we always want to help you be the best healthy version of yourself. Our Wellbeing editor, Linda, teaches us a lot about organic and healthy eating but it is also important to know there are other items or products that, although we don’t think so, can contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
As a general rule, cleaning products, unless used to excess, are pretty safe unless severely inhaled, swallowed or allergic. However, for those who are more sensitive or would prefer to opt for more organic products there are some definite guidelines you can follow.
The ingredients you should try and avoid as they can cause (in some cases) irritation to the lungs and skin.
- Fragrance
- Ammonia contains strong fumes and can be worse when mixed with bleach.
- Chlorine bleach
- Phthalates contains hidden fragrances
- Quats is a common disinfectant linked to irritation
- 2-Butoxyethanol, found in degreasers and window cleaners.
- Synthetic dyes
- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Remember! Natural products aren’t always safe or harmless, however there are many products that you can find in your home that are perfect to successfully clean your home.
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Unscented castile soap
- Microfiber cloths
- Hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting
Marketing can be very misleading and the ‘green’ label trends are everywhere. However, here are some certifications you can look out for that are useful.
- EPA Safer Choice
- ECOCERT
- EWG ratings
- USDA Organic (mostly relevant for ingredients)
- Cruelty-free certifications like Leaping Bunny
Unfortunately, the cleaning product industry is not as controlled or regulated as the food industry. Labels and bottles can be branded as ‘natural’, ‘eco’, ‘non-toxic’ and still contain artificial chemicals and irritants.
So now you know! The next time you go shopping, check out for these certificants and avoid certain chemicals. If ever in doubt, you probably have the perfect cleaning products already in your kitchen cupboards.
We chatted about this topic briefly on our show:
