Preparing for your trip: What to wear in Spain

Spain is well known for its potential to get really (really) hot. Especially in the South. And there are so many clothing options to wear. But which ones are actually the best for in the heat? And which ones can you better leave at home?

You may not think about wool if you want to be less hot in the summer. But merino wool is actually very nice in the summer. Because this wool has thin fibers, it feels very airy. And it also absorbs sweat, is moisture regulating and moisture wicking.

You sweat less in natural, plant-based materials. Cotton and linen are wonderfully airy because they breathe. As a result, you sweat less in them and they are therefore better options in the heat than synthetic materials. Denim sounds warm, but a wider dress – made of thin denim – is just right now.

Viscose is a natural material made from wood and bamboo pulp; it behaves (almost) like cotton. Other fabrics made from bamboo, but also hemp for example, are very nice during hot summer days.

If you plan on doing some sports, you can best wear special dri-fits and dry-techs. Those types of material actually drain moisture, that way your muscles won’t cool down too much.

Clothes that fit too tight are never good when it is hot outside. That is why you always see people, for example, in Afrika, Asia and the Middle-East in long big ‘dresses’.

It is also very important to cover your head because too much sun on your head is never good. Scarfs, hats or turban is a very good way to protect yourself. Lucky for us is that they are totally in right now. So go to the store and score a big sun hat or a nice colorful turban to look good and protect yourself.

You might want to wear as little clothes as possible when the temperatures are high. But it is actually better to cover up your body. The best thing is to wear long linen pants or a long dress that protects your skin against the UV Index and overheating.

Types of material you might want to avoid are for example satin. Satin is a not breathable material and that means that you will sweat even more.

In the summer, people think light colors are always better than darker ones. 8/10 times they’re right but for example white, light blue- or pink reflect sunlight, but also retain body heat. Dark colors actually absorb body heat. More important than the color is the material and the model of your clothing.
