The true story behind Tarot Cards

Would you get your fortune told, or your mind-read? I think we are all curious yet skeptical when it comes to knowing our future, and many find it hard to believe it could possibly be real. Tarot, is a form of ‘reading’ your future via a pack of cards.

On our recent episode of Good Morning Spain, we had our Lady B Tarot pick out some cards for the team- however, what actually is tarot, and how does it work?

In a nutshell, tarot is a tool for divination and self-reflection. It consists of drawing a card from a deck of 78 which have different symbols, numbers and images. The reader will interpret these cards with their intuition based on the questions being asked and the results of the cards drawn.

The history of Tarot is long and mysterious. According to the V&A Museum, tarot dates back to the 12th century in India, Egypt, China and Korea and is estimated to have reached Europe in the 15th century. Originally used as playing cards, the delicate and intricate cards used to entertain the Italian Renaissance courts.

Tarot began to be used for fortune telling in 1770 and gained popularity in the 19th century, with many books being published and ‘experts’ arising.

Nowadays, an estimated 30% of U.S. adults have consulted a tarot card reader or fortune teller at least once a year, according to a 2025 Pew Research survey. This has also gained popularity on social media, with hashtags and online ‘readers’ receiving millions of views and likes.

The tarot cards are divided in two groups: the Major Arcana, which consists of 22 cards and Minor Arcana which are 56. The Major Arcana represent pivotal life events and major turning points and the Minor Arcana indicate more immediate situations and day to day challenges.

Tarot readings, a tool to give reassurance and guidance, can offer an insight into what your future could look like or where your path is heading, but does not offer a concrete or fixed result. Moreover, tarot receives a lot of mixed opinions and emotions, with many swearing by it and others not believing a word. Amongst those who believe, the experience can vary a lot depending on their readers. Here are some first-hand anonymous experiences with tarot.

“I had a great reading with Lady B, I just loved it. Everything was so spot on, she definitely put me on the right track and I now feel I have more direction. She has such a talent to create a calm, comforting, atmosphere in her readings.” – client of Lady B Tarot.

“I went to one reading once and didn’t feel great about it, but I went to someone else and they were very accurate about many things I was living through and I later lived through many of the things she told me I would.”- anonymous.

Overall, tarot is engraved in our history and is a delicate and complex tool of divination. Have you ever received a reading or would you? Let us know! Watch Good Mornings Spain’s recent episode for more information and  to see what Lady B’s live tarot reading said about our team.
