Ramadan is the ninth month in the Muslim calendar and is one of the most sacred times for Muslims. It commemorates the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims dedicate this month to fasting, praying, self-improvement, reflection and community.

The most emblematic part of this month is the fasting. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. During Sawm (fasting), muslims cannot eat, drink, smoke or have sexual relationships at all between dawn to sunset. Before sunrise they eat suhoor, and after the daylight disappears, they break their fast with iftar. Obviously, there are exemptions to fasting which include children, elderly people, people with special medical conditions and women who are pregnant, menstruating and breastfeeding. The fasting is done as a sign of strengthening their faith, self-control and in empathy for those who are in need.As well as fasting, Ramadan includes extra praying and reading of the Qur’an and a lot of self-reflection.
